Who Will Get Academy Award Nominations in 2011?

  • The King’s Speech – Who would think a movie about a man getting a speech therapist to overcome a stammering problem could be so good? When the man is King George VI of England and the actors are Colin Firth, Guy Pierce, and Geoffrey Rush, the film can be pretty darned compelling.
  • Inception – Inspired by such concepts as dream incubation and lucid dreaming, and such psychological phenomena as introspection illusion and false memories, this Leonardo Di Caprio vehicle written and directed by Christopher Nolan is a mind trip about people who commit commercial espionage through people’s dreams.
  • The Social Network – Biopic about the founders of Facebook. Word has it the producers took huge liberties with these guys stories, as one of the guys says they most sat around in front of computers and worked long hours, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a good story, anyway. Jesse Eisenberg finally does something besides moping throughout a whole movie.
  • 127 Hours – A completely different biographical film than The Social Network. This is an intense drama which shows the limits of human endurance, and the limits of the human will to live. James Franco stars as Aron Alston, a mountain climber who got trapped by a boulder during a climb out in Utah. Glad to see James Franco get one of these roles.
  • Black Swan – Director Darren Aronofsky considers this film to be a companion piece to his 2008 Oscar darling, The Wrestler. This one is about two rival ballet dancers in a production of Swan Lake. Natalie Portman is best suited to play the White Swan (innocence), while Mila Kunis is best suited to play the Black Swan (guile). The excellent Vincent Cassel plays the director of the production.
